The Drifters

Knowing she needed to see him Lessa finally relented and went to see him though she refused to take a car instead she rode a train and walked there.

Upon getting the news Reid took it to Ortis, he hoped the boss could do something or come up with a plan of some sort.

When she arrived Sabine was awake and quietly watching the news on his TV. He had a thick wrap of bandages around his head and a stitched, healing cut just under his right eye, as well as a mess of bandages around his torso and his right arm and a cast on his left leg. He seemed to be fairly coherent and looked up slightly when she walked in.

Ortis was intrigued by the news and after a moment he decided to see what other members they could find. Through some research they found that most of the known members were from Japan. Knowing that there was a very famous race in Japan that brought in a lot of money for the victor, he believed that race was funding the organization and asked Reid and West to prep to participate in it.

Lessa slowly walked up.to his bed and lightly took his hand, "you're a moron, you know that right?"

"What about Lessa sir? Right now she is the fastest of us and would stand a better chance of winning this," Reid asked carefully.

"I'll take that as a compliment," Sabine replied in a dry, tired tone as he tried to offer her a tiny smile. "I hear you were successful. Congratulations."

"Lessa has refused to drive since the last race," Ortis admitted, "And unless she can be convinced soon I cannot take the extra time to try to bring her back to racing. You two are currently the best drivers I have."

"I'm done driving, I just can't do it anymore," Lessa admitted quietly as she looked down at the bed.

"I understand, in that case sir I believe it is time that we started practicing." Reid said with a nod before stepping out to work.

"How come?" Sabine asked her carefully as he lightly squeezed her hand. "Is it because of what happened?"

Lessa nodded and tears started rolling down her cheeks, "every time I get behind the wheel all I see is flying metal and flames, I can't do it."

Sabine frowned and lightly tugged on her hand, shifting on the bed with a wince to give her room to sit down as he spoke. "I didn't intend to scare you so much Lessa. I had hoped that making a move like that wasn't going to be necessary, but if I hadn't my tire would have likely shredded on that wall and that man would have gone after you next."

"I understand why you did it but I can't stop seeing it, how do I make it stop?" Lessa asked pathetically, she just wanted the pain and nightmares to stop.

"You need to take a breath, " Sabine suggested softly as he very stiffly wrapped his arm around her shoulders. "Breathe. I'm okay, I'm not going anywhere. No one died. I will recover in time. "

Lessa nodded and relaxed against him, he was the only one that could calm her down in times like this. "How long before you can leave here?"

"Another week at least, " Sabine admitted with a very displeased frown. "I have a couple more surgeries and they want to be sure that I can at least eat something before I leave. "

"I see, I'm glad you are going to be okay. You had me scared," Lessa admitted softly. She was glad he was even alive and breathing at this point.

"I hadn't wanted to scare you, " Sabine frowned a little further as he softly squeezed her shoulder. "I'm sorry Lessa. But I am glad you came by. I was worried about you too."

"I'm fine, just been doing a little hacking to pass the time," Lessa admitted carefully. "I think Reid and West are going to another race here soon."

"What race?" Sabine asked as he looked at her curiously, it was odd for them to be assigbed another race that soon.

"I heard one of the guards saying something about a race in Toyko, I'm not sure what it's for though," Lessa frowned, she probably should have been paying more attention.

"Tokyo?" Sabine eyed her thoughtfully as he spoke. "Father wouldn't send new racers there without reason. There has to be something serious going on. Neither of them are anywhere near good enough for a Tokyo race."

"Then what should we do? If they aren't good enough why would he be sending them? Isn't there someone else that could go that stands a chance?" Lessa asked carefully.

"I'm usually the only one he will send to Tokyo," Sabine frowned as he shifted with a grimace. "I could try to race but it might not end well."

"I remember that but there is no way you can go, is there any other option?" Lessa asked with a frown, she wouldn't let him go for any reason to Toyko.

Sabine paused and looked at her for a long moment before he spoke. "You could go. I can train you."

"You really think I can do that?" Lessa frowned, that meant driving again and racing. He might have faith in her but he might be the only one.

"You are a very gifted driver, " Sabine assured her softly. "I can teach you everything you need to know. "

"Okay, I'll do it but I want you online while I'm racing," Lessa sighed, she knew she had to do it for him. "I don't know how much time e have though to practice."
